Circumcision
What is circumcision ?
Baby boys are born with a foreskin that covers the head of the penis. The foreskins purpose is to protect the glans of the penis to keep it soft, moist and sensitive. Circumcision is the removal of foreskin surgically.
Approximately 55% to 65% of all newborn boys are circumcised in the United States each year. Typically, circumcision is performed for religious beliefs or social and cultural reasons. The procedure is normally performed within the first several days of the child's birth and in the hospital.
What are the risks of circumcision ?
With any surgical procedure, risks may be involved.
Possible risks include :
- Significant blood loss
- Side effects related to anesthesia.
- Infection.
- The foreskin might fail to heal properly.
What are the possible benefits of circumcision ?
Circumcision may have some benefits including :
- Simpler hygiene.
- Lower risk of sexually transmitted disease.
- Decreased risk of penile cancer.
Is circumcision necessary ?
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), circumcision is not medically necessarythough the benefits may outweigh the risks. The AAP leaves the decision to the parents.
How to care for an uncircumcised penis :
Regular bathing provides appropriate cleansing for an uncircumcised penis. Do not retract the foreskin.
