Flu

 

Influenza, or the "the flu” is a very contagious viral infection of the respiratory tract. Although, it can affect all ages, children often get the flu more than adults. It can be spread easily in a classroom, by a sneeze or cough, and through contact with another infected person. Some parents mistake the flu for a stomach bug. However, many of the symptoms may seem similar. Typically, flu symptoms will last about a week but it can take longer for some children to recover.

Flu symptoms in children :

  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Muscle aches
  • Dizziness
  • Stomach pain and vomiting
  • Sore throat
  • Headaches
  • Tiredness
  • Cough
  • Chills and shakes

Call our offices if your child has any of the following symptoms :

  • Symptoms listed above seem to be getting worse
  • Fever lasting longer than three days
  • Child has a high fever with a rash
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Ear pain
  • Persistent cough
  • Seems lethargic and extremely tired
  • Child seems confused
  • Has a Blueish skin color

Tips for calming flu symptoms :

Typically, the flu does not require medical treatment. However, there are some things you can do to help care for your child.

  • Plenty of liquids.
  • Plenty of rest.
  • Give acetaminophen or ibuprofen for achy muscles.
  • For very young children use a nasal bulb to remove mucus.
  • Speak with your doctor before using any over-the-counter medications.
