Pinkeye

Conjunctivitis or Pinkeye is an infection that affects the covering of the eyeball and the inner surface of the eyelid. It is usually caused by many of the same viruses and bacteria responsible for colds and other infections. Another cause of Pinkeye can be allergies or chemical pollutants in the air that irritate the eye. Pinkeye, while alarming is fairly common and usually does not cause any long-term damage to the eye.

Pinkeye caused by a virus or bacteria is highly contagious and can be spread easily by direct contact with an infected person, indirect contact with a contaminated object or through the air by a sneeze or cough. Children diagnosed with Pinkeye should stay home from school and away from other children.

Contact our offices if you think your child may have Pinkeye. Below are a few of the symptoms to look for :

• Itchiness eyes
• Redness in the whites of the eye
• The eyelid may be swollen
• Discharge from the eye may make eyelids stick together during sleep
• Sensitivity to light

Pinkeye that is caused by a virus will usually go away on its own. However, Pinkeye caused by bacteria may require prescription antibiotic eye drops or ointment. Putting cool or warm compresses on the eyes may provide your child some relief.

• Wash hands thoroughly and often.
• Do not share eye drops, makeup, tissues, pillowcases or linens with another person.
• If your child has Pinkeye be sure to wash all linens and towels in hot water to disinfect.
