Croup is an upper respiratory condition that is common to young children. It causes swelling and inflammation of the upper airways which leads to a harsh cough and often difficulty breathing. Croup is usually mild and resolves itself after 2-5 days. Most symptoms can be managed at home.
Croup is often caused by the same virus that causes the common cold. It is contagious and can be passed along through coughing, sneezing or contact. Regular hand-washing and getting the flu vaccine can help with prevention.
