Expecting Parents

Ten things to get prepared for your baby’s arrival

40 weeks seems like plenty of time to prepare for your baby’s arrival. However, time goes by quickly when you're juggling work and other family obligations. Below is a list of things to help you get prepared for your baby’s arrival

  • Take a birthing class : Birthing classes will help you learn about the basics of labor, breathing and relaxing techniques and options for pain management.
  • Find a Pediatrician : The best time to start looking for a doctor for your baby is mid-way through the pregnancy. We would be happy to serve your pediatrician needs, please contact us to schedule an evaluation appointment.
  • Know the breastfeeding basics : Breastfeeding does not always happen immediately and can be a learning process. Make sure you learn the basics before you give birth. Most hospitals offer free classes that can help prepare you for what to expect.
  • Attend a newborn care class : Attending a newborn care class is especially helpful for first-time parents.
  • Make your birth plan and decide who will attend the birth : Both making your birth plan and deciding who will attend your birth are very personal decisions. Take some time to research and determine the best options for you and your baby. Also, keep in mind that there are a lot of things that happen during labor that are beyond your control.
  • Purchase essential equipment and set up the nursery : There are so many baby products on the market knowing what you actually need can be a little overwhelming. Ask friends, family, and other parents about what essentials are most important such as a car seat, crib or bassinet, diapers, wipes, clothing, linens, bottles, and formula. Many items can wait until after the baby is born. However, it is important to have the basics, so you are well prepared.
  • Wash all baby’s linens and clothes : Make sure to wash all baby clothes, bedding, towels and washcloths in baby detergent before using.
  • Install a car seatPurchase a federally approved car seat and make sure it is properly installed. The safest placement for a car seat is the middle of the rear seat, facing backward.
  • Pack your hospital bag and take a hospital tour : Ease your mind by having your hospital bag packed with all the essentials a few weeks prior to your delivery date. It is also a good idea to take a hospital tour to familiarize yourself with the facility and what to expect.
  • Freeze meals, pack the fridge, and line up help : before your due date it is a good idea to stock your refrigerator with easy to prepare nutritious meals. If you’re fortunate enough to have family nearby it may also be helpful to discuss the various ways they may be able to help in the first couple of months.
