What to consider when choosing your Pediatrician ?

If you are new or expecting parents, choosing the right provider for your child is an extremely important decision. You should feel comfortable with your Pediatrician’s philosophies, policies, and practice. If possible, both parents should be involved in this process and attend the first meeting and appointment together. There are many questions you may have, so it is recommended to make a list so that you are well prepared.

Below are a few questions to consider :

  • Does the Pediatrician accept new patients with my insurance or managed care plan ?
  • What is the cost of a routine visit and how is billing handled ?
  • What are the office hours ?
  • When is the best time to call with questions ? Is the doctor available by phone or email ?
  • What hospital does the doctor prefer to use ?
  • What happens if there is an after-hours emergency or weekend concern ?
  • Who covers the practice when your pediatrician is not available ?
  • What is their philosophy on breastfeeding, nutrition, diet, antibiotics or any other areas of special interest and importance ?

Other questions you may have involve care immediately after birth. Below is some general information regarding standard processes during and after hospitalization.

What to expect during and after birth ?

How soon will the Pediatrician see my baby ?

Typically, the hospital will ask the name of your Pediatrician when you are admitted to deliver your baby. If you have complications during birth, a staff Pediatrician from the hospital may conduct a medical exam. If you do not have complications, a standard exam will usually take place within the first 24 hours of birth. This is when the baby will go through a series of tests that screen for hearing, jaundice, thyroid and other disorders.

When will my baby’s next scheduled appointment take place ?

Many Pediatricians examine newborns before they are discharged from the hospital. This will give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have, and to find out when your Pediatrician recommends the first scheduled office exam.

How often will the Pediatrician see my child ?

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a check-up within forty-eight to seventy-two hours after your newborn is discharged from the hospital. During the first year, your baby will most likely have scheduled visits at two and four weeks, then at 2, 4, 6, 9 and 12 months. In the second year, your baby will see the Pediatrician at 15, 18 and 24 months. Then annual visits will take place after the age of two years old.
