What is constipation ?

Constipation is a very common problem in young children. A child is considered constipated when he or she has less than three bowel movements in a week, has trouble having a large bowel movement, or when the stool is very hard and dry.

What causes constipation ?

  • Constipation may be caused by a diet lacking of fiber and water. Eating a healthy diet full of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains will help prevent constipation.
  • Some medications can cause constipation.
  • Children who avoid going to the bathroom when they need to can become constipated.
  • Stress can lead to constipation.

What are the symptoms of constipation ?

  • Having difficulty or pain when going to the bathroom
  • Going to the bathroom less than usual
  • Feeling full or complaining of a stomach ache
  • Stains on underwear from stool
  • Small traces of blood on toilet paper

How to treat constipation ?

  • Plenty of fluids. Try a few ounces of prune juice.
  • Your doctor may recommend a stool softener.
  • High-fiber foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grain bread.
  • Exercise
  • Making bathroom time a habit.
